Auctus Agri is built on a multi-disciplinary research base — applied agronomy, plant breeding, agrifood trade policy, institutional systems, data science, and specialist-crop science. The areas below describe the depth our consulting, evaluation, and training engagements draw on. They are also the areas in which the firm produces published work.

Area 01

Agrifood trade competitiveness & export compliance

The firm's in-house applied research programme on the underutilisation of EU trade preferences in South African agrifood exports under the EU–SADC Economic Partnership Agreement. Critical Realist epistemology with Comparative Multi-Scalar (CMS) analysis across HS Chapter 7 (vegetables), HS Chapter 8 (fresh fruit including citrus, deciduous, table grapes, avocados), and HS Chapter 22 (wine and beverages). Continuing research follows the compliance-cost-as-non-tariff-barrier thread.

Working questions. Where does the EU's regulatory unilateralism on phytosanitary measures, MRL revisions, and rules-of-origin produce competitive asymmetry against South African producers? What institutional adjustments at producer, cooperative, exporter, and port level close the gap?

Applied translation. The research underlies the firm's EU–SADC Export Readiness Checklist and informs every Trade & Export Advisory engagement.

Area 02

Smallholder systems & institutional trust

Active research on the institutional, technological, and behavioural conditions under which traceability systems — including blockchain-enabled architectures — either build or fail to build buyer-side trust in smallholder supply pipelines. The work is framed by institutional theory and a systematic literature review of trust mechanisms across African smallholder agriculture.

Working questions. What does buyer-side trust in smallholder supply actually consist of? Where do technological interventions help, and where do they record weak data faithfully? What is the long-run sustainability of trust infrastructure beyond donor funding cycles?

Applied translation. The research underlies the Smallholder Trust & Traceability Diagnostic tool (released Q3 2026) and informs the firm's smallholder commercialisation and cooperative readiness engagements.

Area 03

Plant breeding, varietal research & crop science

In-house plant breeding and varietal research capability covering tobacco, industrial hemp, medicinal cannabis, and selected horticultural crops. The work spans germplasm conservation, varietal trials for disease resistance and yield optimisation, Standard Operating Procedure development for breeding methodologies, and field-trial design and analysis.

Capability. Multi-season varietal trial management; SOP-led breeding methodology; trial data generation for variety-choice advisory programmes; technical reporting suitable for divisional and management distribution.

Applied translation. Variety selection advisory for commercial producers and cooperatives; SOP design for clients standing up their own breeding or trial programmes; technical input on disease resistance and yield-potential decisions.

Area 04

Specialist crops — industrial hemp, medicinal cannabis & tobacco

A concentrated specialism in the South African and SADC industrial hemp and medicinal cannabis pipelines, drawing on plant-breeding research, field-trial data, and direct experience with cultivation and licensing pathways. The firm has presented at the Cannabis Business Expo (Zurich 2021; Cape Town 2022 and 2024) and maintains active research on disease resistance and yield optimisation in tobacco, hemp, and medicinal cannabis.

Scope. Crop selection, soil management, integrated pest management, precision irrigation, and licensing-pathway analysis for commercial cannabis and hemp operations. Export-market analysis for hemp and cannabis derivatives.

What we do not cover. Retail dispensary operations and downstream consumer-brand development. The work is cultivation- and licensing-side.

Area 05

Climate-smart farming systems & data analytics

Applied research on climate-smart cropping systems in southern African contexts — including maize, pulse, and horticultural cropping under projected climate stress — combined with operational data analytics capability built on Power BI, R, and Python. The team has designed and managed agricultural field research trials in climate-smart farming since the mid-2000s, with formal training applied to the analysis of experimental results.

Capability. Field-trial design and analysis; quantitative benchmarking against peer datasets; Power BI dashboard development for farm and programme-level KPIs; integration of business analytics into farm-management reporting.

Applied translation. Climate adaptation programme design for DFI clients; the four-number farm diagnostic for commercial agribusiness; management-reporting upgrades that translate operational data into board-defensible reporting.

Area 06

Farmer & workforce training

GlobalG.A.P. accredited training capability covering plant protection, worker health and safety, cooperative readiness for Option 2 group certification, and audit-day preparation. The team has delivered structured farmer extension programming since 2006, including for one of the leading international humanitarian organisations operating in rural southern Africa, and has trained farmers and stakeholders on tobacco, industrial hemp, medicinal cannabis, and horticultural production.

Formats. Cooperative-scale workshops; producer-level on-farm training; documentation-system training for cooperative quality management staff; train-the-trainer programmes; literacy-appropriate photo- and demonstration-based training for low-literacy producer groups.

Applied translation. The Training & Compliance service line — GlobalG.A.P. v6 readiness training for cooperatives, farmer extension training for donor-funded programmes, and worker health-and-safety training calibrated to the specific buyer or regulatory audit ahead.

Area 07 · Flagship

Artificial intelligence & machine learning for agriculture

The firm's flagship research-into-practice stream. Combining advanced data-science capability across the network with eighteen years of agricultural fieldwork, the lab develops, trains, and deploys custom AI models for African agribusiness use cases.

Active capability. Computer vision (crop disease, weed and pest identification, stand-count, plant-health monitoring from drone, satellite, and phone-camera imagery). Tabular ML and forecasting (yield prediction, input-cost optimisation, price and commodity forecasting, post-harvest loss modelling). NLP and LLM workflows (AI-assisted compliance documentation, EU MRL surveillance, audit-prep automation, RAG over regulatory texts). Agentic systems (multi-step decision-support agents for agronomic Q&A, spray-window recommendation, and market-intelligence briefings).

Methodological discipline. Agronomy-first model design, human-in-the-loop validation on every decision that touches regulation or commerce, explainability (SHAP, attention maps) over benchmark scores, open-source-first stack with commercial models where they outperform, data sovereignty by default, and peer-review-grade documentation for reproducibility.

Area 08

Applied research methodology — Critical Realism & CMS analysis

Methodological depth in mixed-methods evaluation, Critical Realist epistemology, and Comparative Multi-Scalar (CMS) analysis applied to agricultural value-chain and institutional-capacity research. The methodological work is current — drawn from the firm's two in-house research programmes on EU trade-preference utilisation and smallholder trust mechanisms — and is the analytical backbone of every Applied Research & Evaluation engagement.

Capability. Mixed-methods study design (quantitative + qualitative streams designed to triangulate); Critical Realist analysis of institutional and structural causation; CMS comparison across HS product categories or institutional scales; peer-review-grade reporting suitable for DFI conventions.

Applied translation. Baseline and endline studies, mid-term evaluations, MEL system design, and value-chain assessments for DFI clients operating in southern and eastern African agriculture.

In-house applied research

Two research programmes anchor the practice.

The firm operates two in-house applied research programmes that feed client deliverables and underpin the proprietary platforms. Both are peer-review-grade, methodologically explicit, and updated as the field moves.

Programme 01 — EU trade preference utilisation

An applied research programme on the underutilisation of EU trade preferences in South African agrifood exports under the EU–SADC Economic Partnership Agreement. Critical Realist methodology with Comparative Multi-Scalar (CMS) analysis across four HS product categories. The programme is the analytical foundation of the firm's Trade & Export Advisory line, the EU–SADC Export Readiness Checklist, and — in operational form — the TradeVault Africa platform.

Programme 02 — Smallholder trust & traceability

An ongoing applied research programme on blockchain-enabled trust and transparency mechanisms for smallholder farmers in the Eastern Cape. Systematic literature review with institutional theory framing, supported by field-level interviews. Findings feed the firm's Applied Research & Evaluation engagements and the forthcoming Smallholder Trust & Traceability Diagnostic tool.

Industry participation

Auctus Agri operates as a curated network of senior practitioners across South Africa and the SADC region — agronomists, plant breeders, data scientists, trade specialists, applied researchers, and regulatory practitioners. Engagements are staffed to the brief from within this network, not assigned to a fixed org chart.

The network model does three things at once. It matches the specialism required to the person doing the work, at senior depth. It keeps overhead low, which keeps day rates within standard short-term consultant bands. And it lets the firm scale up for large multi-country evaluations without diluting seniority — every named associate has prior collaborative track record with the practice and is named in proposals when their role is material.

The firm does not send junior teams. The practitioner who scopes the engagement is the practitioner who does the work.
